Another one bites the dust (the weekend, that is)

Fair warning: there will be no quilt content in this post because I accomplished nothing on the weekend. Surprised? I think not. I have all these good intentions and they consistantly amount to SQUAT.

I did manage to drive my sister to T.O. to the passport office on Friday (pleasant surprise: only a 20 minute wait.... could've been a lot worse). Then we spent the rest of the day shopping, eating, and managed to stop at a casino on the way home! (My sister and I were raised in family of gamblers, and for the most part we don't gamble, but every now and then, when we are together, we take a trip down memory lane and either go to Bingo or to a casino. Since we only do it once a year, my husband hasn't felt it necessary to send me for professional help yet... LOL). It was a good day, I only get to see my sister three or four times a year and it was nice to have the whole day to ourselves (ie: no kids)

Sunday I drove to Waterloo for BoyCrazy's bowling tournament. Another long day, we didn't get home until almost 11:00pm. And to top it off, she didn't bowl well and was not happy about it. Get over it, sweetheart, it's only bowling....

Speaking of "get over it" both my girls got a tattoo yesterday. It took them two years of NON-STOP nagging before Daddy and I gave in, but I'm still not happy about it. I guess I'll "get over it" eventually. Don't ask me why I don't like tattoos because I really don't know.... I have several family members and lots of friends who have them, but I just don't get it.... I think it's the permanent part that freaks me out... what if you hate it when your 30 or 40? The bright side is that I still have some pull as Mom, and the conditions were 1) it has to be small 2) no where I can see it unless you're wearing a bikini 3) don't even THINK about getting a second one until you move out! Why did I have kids? I really can't remember.....

Wait! I'm not done yet: BabyBoy brought home his report card Friday and he has a 41 in English. 41! R U Kidding me!?? I almost had a heart attack. I have never seen a failing grade from one of my kids before.... He says he has no idea why he's failing, he's sure he's done all of his work, blah blah blah. Now I have to go see his teacher because I'm pretty sure you don't fail if you make an honest effort and actually DO all of the work, and his track record in the homework department is not the greatest. bam! bam! bam! (this is me pounding my head on the desk....)

I do love my kids, but give me a break already....

I REALLY need to be quilting... and soon.....

Busy, Busy, Busy

I finished quilting the Chinese Coins quilt, now I just have to bind it. Then I need to put the one I made for my sister on the frame. It took me two years to make it and it's been almost a year waiting to be quilted. But, of course, I couldn't just stick to quilting... SportsFan and I started ripping the wallpaper off the wall in our small bathroom... what a mess (yes, he's finally feeling better, not great, but better).

This weekend is going to be crazy, too. My sister is coming for a visit Friday so that I can drive her to Toronto (hour and half drive) to get her passport (she refuses to drive the 401 highway), Saturday I'm going to Toronto for the big show (Hazel: too bad you're going on Friday....we could have met up.... hopefully next time) and then on Sunday I have to take BoyCrazy to Waterloo (the other side of Toronto) for a bowling tournament. Three trips to Toronto in one weekend and gas is up to $1.20 a litre (that's roughly $4.50 a gallon US).... and not possible to combine them. (Did you notice that I renamed my children? The oldest girl I now call BoyCrazy, next is MaterialGirl (no, I'm not talking fabric) and of course the youngest is SportsFan. It's a good thing they don't read my blog (LOL)).

As long as I manage to get the quilt on the frame this week, I'll be happy. Then I can work on it whenever I have little spurts of sparetime. It's a sampler quilt and since I want to quilt each square differently, I'm not going to be in a hurry to finish it.

My Baby....

Actually, both of them....

Baby boy is still sick so we're going to see the doctor later today, now he's coughing so hard it makes him throw up. Lovely.

The other baby is my quilting machine.... Suzan asked me about it:

I have an HQ16 with Handiquilter table and frame. I love it. It has a stitch regulator but I very seldom use it. Once you get used to it, you don't need the stitch regulator. I bought it last May (wow, almost a year now) and I use it just for myself. I don't quilt other peoples stuff. My kids think I'm crazy because I don't do it as a part-time job, but since I already have a fulltime job, I stick to quilting for fun (it's my stress relief!).

So far I haven't done anything larger than a twin, but I'm thinking of attempting a queen size quilt for my bed soon. Maybe. Or I might just work on one of the dozen or so projects I have waiting to be started ...LOL

The only thing more fun than quilting is...... thinking about quilting! With books... magazines..... planning the next one....choosing a pattern..... picking out the fabric .....BUYING the fabric... LOL

One last thing, I was working on the Chinese Coins quilt last night (previous post) and my husband walks through the room and says "Wow, nice colours." Huh? Is the man colour blind? I mean it's not ugly or anything, but I have done a lot nicer quilts in the past and he never says a word... go figure.

I spoke too soon....

My son is sick.... my poor baby. (He's 14 years old and 5'10, not really a baby, but hey... he is to me). Anyways, he's been sick since the weekend and I feel so bad. He's not eating (that says it all .... he normally eats like a horse). He's missed three days of school, if he's not feeling better by tonight he's going to have to go see the doctor tomorrow.

I've been working on one of my UFO's (this is the one with the wavy borders I had to redo) but between the sick child and the NHL playoffs (we are all hockey nerds in my house) it's not getting done in a hurry.
The pattern is Chinese coins and the colours are a little wild but I'm starting to like it better than I did. The closeups are my attempt at free hand leaves.

I wasn't thinking when I put it on the frame, though. I should have put it on sideways...DUH...
So I have done a loopy meander on the outside border, and now I'm in the middle of turning the quilt on the frame so I can do each row in one pass.
Eventually, I will get this stuff right the first time.....

Spring ..... Finally

Thankfully, no one else got sick so the weekend went well. I spent a little time working on a couple of UFO's but most of the weekend I spent spring cleaning. The weather was so nice I had to open the doors and windows which in turn made me want to clean .... (yuck, but someone has to do it LOL).

And before I forget... Drum roll, please.... I FINALLY got high-speed at home!!!! This is MAJOR at my house. Up until now we've had to settle for really slow dial-up. This means I can actually read blogs from home (you have no idea how painfully slow our connection was because of the really old phone lines in our area) I'm so happy....

Bailey and Willow soaking up the sun ......

Speaking of Bailey.... the stupid cat won't come in at night and keeps getting in a fight with something, I'm not sure what. We live out in the country so it could be anything. Yesterday morning he came home all scratched up and bleeding, DD2 was so upset I thought she was going to cry. I try keeping him in at night, but he waits until about 1:00am and then starts to meow ... LOUDLY.... and doesn't stop. Serioulsy, the cat can meow for an hour straight. Sigh. Cats.... kids.... can't live with 'em ..... etc

What was I thinking?

I decided yesterday that I’m not going to start a new project until I finish a UFO. So last night I pulled out a top from 3 or 4 years ago and laid it out on the floor to measure for the backing…. HOLY COW! The borders were so wavy it was laughable! I’m looking at this thing thinking “was I drunk when I did this?” LOL ... It took me over an hour to fix it. I have no idea what I was thinking when I sewed them on. I probably finished it late at night when the brain is already asleep.

Speaking of sleep (or lack thereof): I’m a little tired today since DH came down with some type of stomach virus yesterday and I had to sleep on the couch (not the best sleep I’ve ever had), I wasn’t taking any chances on sharing that! I made the kids stay away from him all night, but it probably won’t help and we’ll all be throwing up by tomorrow…. I hope not, I have plans to quilt all weekend, I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

Guild Meeting

I went to my guild meeting this morning, I LOVE show and tell. These are some of the quilts (not mine) that were shown today. I am always amazed at the talent that people have. The unicorn quilt is hand applique. She did a beautiful job. Check out the tiny creatures at the bottom of the quilt. The Mardis Gras quilt has some interesting embellishments on it; Mardi Gras beads, etc. The picture of the machine quilting is from the back of the Dresden Plate quilt.

On a happy note, I finished the charity quilt and gave it back this morning. I am now trying to decide which of the many projects floating around in my head I'm going to start next... LOL

This is Winnie the Pooh and TiggerII : I haven't sewed the borders on yet... maybe tonight.

What I need to do first is fix my quilting machine. Either the table is not level, or the tracks need to be reapplied to the table. Whatever it is, it's making the machine have little jerky movements every once in a while. I think I'm going to try to reapply the tracks first. I read on someone else's blog that the sticky things it came with can cause tiny bumps in the track and that she switched it for double sided tape instead. Hmmm.. it's worth a shot. If that doesn't help, I'm going to have to convince DH to take it apart and re-level it for me.....(I'd do it myself but it's too heavy) .
